GNM – Nursing in India The GNM full form is General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM or GNM Nursing) and it is a 3.5-year-long diploma program with 3 years of regular study and 6 months of mandatory internship. The GNM syllabus and subjects cover topics such as Microbiology, Psychology, Sociology, Fundamentals of Nursing, Community Health Nursing, etc. The GNM job scope is vast and employment opportunities are available in both the public and private sectors.

GNM or General Nursing and Midwifery is 3 year course followed by 6 months of mandatory internship dealing with the nursing practice of a niche segment like maternity care, post-trauma, rehabilitation, mental care, data collection etc. There are 1,00,930 Nursing seats in 1936 Nursing Colleges in India. GNM Admission takes place through Entrance Exams conducted by State Governments. There is no central exam for GNM Admission. Students need to study Science in class 12 in order to be eligible for GNM Admission.  
  2. GNM Full Form is General Nursing and Midwifery. Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai first started the training of midwives in India with 4 students in the year 1871. Students needs to clear class 12 with English and Science subjects in order to be eligible for GNM.

GNM Admission Process

GNM Nursing course admissions are chiefly offered through the result score of various state-level entrance exams. 

Note: Students can also pursue a GNM Nursing Distance Learning course from IGNOU New Delhi.

  • Candidates need to have completed 10+2 in order to appear for GNM Nursing exams. 
  • Students need to fill out the application form and deposit the admission fees. If their score meets the criterion of the college they are planning for, they will be given direct admission.

GNM Eligibility

The main eligibility criteria to pursue a GNM Nursing course in India are listed below.

  • Students must have completed their 10+2 from the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as mandatory subjects.
  • Also, candidates should have obtained at least 50% marks in their qualifying exams. Some of the top medical colleges offering GNM Nursing course ask for 60% marks.
  • They must also have obtained the minimum number of marks required in their GNM Nursing Entrance Exam Result.

GNM Nursing: Exam Date 2023

GNM Nursing entrance exams are conducted by various State Departments of India. Every state has its own entrance test for admission in GNM course.

GNM Application form is the most basic criteria for GNM Admission. Right now GNM Nursing Application form has been released in SAIL and the exam will be conducted on  September 29, 2022. The application form gets released for every GNM Admission in each state.

What is GNM Nursing Course?

GNM or General Nursing and Midwifery is a 3.5 years duration course that is commonly also known as GNM Nursing. It is a diploma-level course, suitable for those who want to pursue a career in clinical nursing.

The 3.5 years of GNM Nursing course duration are divided into 3 years of education and 6 months of mandatory internship. Students of all streams in Class 12th are eligible to pursue GNM Nursing course, though Science students with Biology as a subject are preferred. Some of the top GNM colleges ask for a minimum of 60% marks in Class 12th though most other colleges ask for 50% marks.

Types of GNM Nursing Course

Basic GNM

The most common type of GNM is the basic GNM course. It is a bachelor’s degree that trains the students to acquire nursing aptitudes to administer the required knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive nursing care to the patients for various types of diseases. The course is specially formed to make general nurses who are able to efficiently perform in the health team in various hospitals and other organizations.

The course lasts for 3 years, where candidates have to come through 10+2 exams with a science stream with a minimum of 40% aggregate marks. Also, the age of the candidates should be between 17 to 35 years. Also, it is necessary for every student to be medically fit.

Post Basic GNM

Candidates in the post-basic GNM or post-basic BSc Nursing explore advanced knowledge. This knowledge is rendered via classroom along with educational visits and clinical teachings. There is a good scope of post-basic GNM. Candidates can get jobs at nursing educational institutions, clinics, public health centers, etc. The duration of the basic version of this course lasts 3 years, whereas the regular version of this course lasts for 2 years.

Distance GNM

Since GNM or General Nursing and Midwifery is a highly technical profession there is very limited scope for distance learning. Students must be wary of colleges providing GNM in distance mode.
